Everything about the job, on the job

Open a job and you see the customer, the address, what needs doing, and where the money stands. No second window.

  • Checklists your technicians tick off on site
  • Photos from the field, attached to the job
  • Internal notes your customer never sees
  • The estimate and the invoice on the same record
  • Permits, plans, and PDFs attached too
One job. Everything about it.

Jobs that take more than one visit

Add as many appointments as the work needs, in phases if that is how it runs. The history stays on one record instead of scattered across three.

  • Book the return visit without making a second job
  • Different technicians on different visits
  • Each visit numbered, so everyone knows which one is next
Visit 1 of 2, then visit 2 of 2.

Work that has to happen in order

Some jobs cannot start until another one is finished. Pillar holds the second job until the first is done instead of letting somebody roll a truck for nothing.

  • Prerequisite jobs listed on the record that is waiting
  • Finish-to-start blocking, so the held job cannot be started early
  • A banner on the job saying what it is waiting on
Two prerequisites, both blocking.

The checklist is set before the truck leaves

Build a template once for the work you do over and over. Its checklist, its default length, and its default price come with every job created from it.

  • A default checklist per type of work
  • Steps that require a photo before they can be ticked
  • Default duration and default price on the template
  • Technicians work the list on the phone, on site

Drain cleaning: 60 minutes, four steps, two need a photo.

How it goes

One pool job, seven visits

Week one

The record opens

One job is created for the whole build, with the customer, the address, and the scope on it.

Week two

Visit one of seven

Excavation goes on the calendar. The photos and the notes from that day attach to the same record.

Week three

The hold

Plumbing rough-in is waiting on the electrical job. Pillar holds it and says so on the record.

Week six

The handover

Seven visits, four technicians, and every photo and note in one place when the customer calls next spring.

Switched on, like everything else

Job records are free, however many people open them and however many visits one job takes. What meters on this page is the photos: at least 25 GB of storage comes with the account and another 25 GB with each paid person, so a team’s allowance grows as the team does.

Questions about work orders

What is the difference between a job and a work order?

Nothing, in Pillar. The job is the work order: one record carrying the schedule, the checklist, the photos, and the invoice.

Can one job have several visits?

Yes. Add as many appointments as the work needs, and every visit stays on the same record with its own technician and time.

Can I stop a job starting before another one finishes?

Yes. Add the first job as a prerequisite and Pillar blocks the second until it is completed, with a banner on the record saying what it is waiting on.

How many jobs can one person create a month?

One hundred, which is roughly five completed calls a working day, with the same allowance for estimates and invoices. The cap applies only while you are the only person on the account, and a second person removes it.

Do photos count against a storage limit?

Yes. Every account starts with at least 25 GB and gains another 25 GB for each paid person. If you ever need more, it is sold in 100 GB blocks at $10 a month.
